Information on fad diets

What are fad diets? We explain the fad diet.

The word Fad means freakish or a misjudged topic while diet originates from the Greek word "Diaita", which means 'manner of living' or lifestyle. Thus, diet not only stands for what you eat or do not eat, but also how you eat or when you eat. Fad diets are everywhere these days. High protein diets, Detox diets, food combining diets and others are regularly highlighted for their effective results in weight loss programs the world over. But closer scrutiny reveals that these are nothing but myths.

Let us consider Detox Diet as the myth. Many celebrities are detoxing their system through diets that exclude wheat, dairy products, sugar, caffeine and alcohol. Though this regimen may apparently cleanse our blood and flush out toxins, but it can never be effective in getting rid of Cellulite (though claimed to be particularly effective). Nor can it help in losing weight overnight.

For the past 20 years, the consensus of nutritional advice in the United Kingdom has been to eat less fat and more complex carbohydrates and also fresh fruit and vegetables. But such a practical approach is often considered too simple, too boring or too slow. Desperate people will often take desperate measures. Most literatures available on the subject and wayside slim-trim clinics exploit the slimmer's desperation and obsession with weight, shape and appearance by feeding them a succession of half truths and sham science, claiming to assist in their attempts to lose weight.

By opting for these fad diets, many obese people have tried but failed to shed fat and ended up spending a small fortune. In spite of all this, the enthusiasm for a 'quick fix' seems to be undiminished. With the prominence of these bogus solutions, it is hardly surprising that the public is frequently confused by the apparent mixed messages.

In conclusion, one should get rid of fancy fad diets and aim for a long term goal, requiring a more holistic approach focusing primarily on health and not on unrealistic target body weights. Just remember that reducing dietary fat leads to a reduction in the risk of coronary heart diseases. Increasing complex hydrocarbons helps promote a healthy GI tract. Higher intake of fruits and vegetables reduces the risk of some types of cancer and by eating a healthy and balanced diet, you can maintain a healthy weight.
